Rules and Guidelines for the:
MUSIC VIDEO CHALLENGE
Original Song Video Contest
This is a music video contest that requires middle and high school students to submit their original songs in a music video format by May 30th.
 
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT A MUSIC VIDEO IN THIS CONTEST
• High School & Middle School students between the ages of 10 to 18 
   years of age and attending:        
• Public high schools
• Private high schools    
• Home schooled MVC Minor Release Form
• Have at least at 2.0 GPA
• State of Hawaii students 
• All musicians, singers and featured actors under the age of 18 must fill out and sign the “Minor 
  Release Form” and submit it with your music video.

MUSIC VIDEO FORMAT
• minimum length: two minutes  
• maximum length: 3.5 minutes
• Standard Definition or High Definition (preferred)
• Submit entries by internet or mail in DVD. Be sure to use apps that do not compress your video.     

SONG and MUSIC GUIDELINES and AGREEMENT FOR USAGE AND IMAGE RELEASE From the ARTIST/STUDENT/PARTICIPANT(S):
• submit only original lyrics by the one or more of the registered students submitting the music video.
• the music and arrangement must be original in content and notation by the studen(s) submitting the 
  music video, non participating students and adult supervision and support is acceptable with 
  explanation for approval. (Multimedia classes/teachers, parents of the students, music educators, 
  and use of professional recording studios and video production houses, etc.)
• lyrics, titles, themes, scenes or any part of the video production deemed offensive, hurtful or  
  demeaning for one’s culture, religion or race in language or content will not be aired or eligible to 
  participate in this contest.
• lyrics submitted in native language are accepted.
• artist/contestant(s) shall grant to Johnny Kai Productions and all affiliated companies the exclusive 
  license to use the names of the students and all associated participants including all submitted 
  music, songs, lyrics, videos in the making of the music video to include video and photographic 
  images in the promotion, distribution and airing on television, websites and all forms of internet 
  social media outlets.
• all music, songs, videos, entries submitted to this contest is non-returnable and become sole 
  property of Johnny Kai Productions  
• Johnny Kai Productions reserves the right for any reason at any time or date to omit, disqualify, 
  deem ineligible of any music video and/or song submitted in this contest. 
• by submitting a music video in the Music Video Challenge it is agreed that you have read and 
  understand the rules, guidelines and agreement for usage and image release of all materials and 
  persons participating in this contest. If you have questions or need for clarification please contact 
  Johnny Kai Productions.
• Johnny Kai Productions agrees to post links and make accessible this document via the website 
  registration pages of the Brown Bags to Stardom website. All contestants, members and participants   
  may copy, download and/or read this document of rules, guidelines and agreement.

QUESTIONS SUBMITTED TO THE MUSIC VIDEO CHALLENGE:
Can adult musicians be in the music video? YES - but they cannot be principal characters nor can the be featured or leading musicians. They can only be backup musicians and/or walk on character roles in the music video. 

Can college band members appear in it for any time at all or for a short time?  YES, but they cannot be principal characters nor can the be featured or leading musicians. They can only be backup musicians and/or walk on character roles in the music video. 

If the adults can't be in the video can I take tight shots of just them playing their instruments and no faces?  YES

Can elementary and intermediate school students be included as backup dancers in support of the music video even if they are not band members? YES. They can be actors and/or dancers playing supporting roles for the music video.

Are we allowed to use a professional recording studio? YES

Can we use professional engineers and professional production crews for the audio and video recording? YES, but the video concepts used must be the initiative of the school students submitting the music video. The adults or teachers can be advisors in offering a learning experience and/or be a professional adviser in a supporting role to benefit the students from an educational stand point.

Can students enter in BOTH the Brown Bags to Stardom and Music Video Challenge? YES
